Pedagogical prize to Software teacher Carl Magnus Olsson
Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 | Education, Software | 1 Comment
My colleague and friend Carl Magnus Olsson just received a prize, “University of Gothenburg awards teachers for excellent pedagogical contributions to education”. I’ve had the pleasure of working tightly with Carl Magnus for a couple of years and can only say he’s worth it. The amount of hours spent preparing the course, reading and commenting hand ins, reading student papers ….. and his usual verbose email replies.
It is inspiring ….. CMO, You rock

This year’s embedded project (at IT University in Gothenburg, Sweden) is over and the grade have been set. During the oral exams we (teacher/supervisor) asked them tons of questions. A funny biproduct of the oral exams are user stats.
We asked the students (50 of them) to report their first and second (if any) operating system they used during the project. We also asked them about their favorite editors. Yeah, and the most popular GNU/Linux distribution was Ubuntu, followed by Debian and linuxmint.
Operating system used (first and second choice):
GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac
Operating system used (only primary):
GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac
Editors used:

I’ve had the pleasure to be the supervisor for the 2nd year students at IT University in Gothenburg. The students decided early on to build a Mars lander, using LEGO.
I will not spend too much time on elaborating on that but I got a couple of links from the demo and a video that I want people to see. I think that the video and the photos pretty much captures the work they did. Oh yeah, and what’s best, I am in the video. The skinny bearded man that tries to hide (and fails) from the camera.
Here’s the video: http://animoto.com/play/F1xXwDkjRZSGeMEh1qkQCg

After the examination (of the students above) I will focus on the Advanced Free Software Tools (temp info available here and here). Hopefully I will see a few of them again. We have some pretty interesting projects going on with a municipality near Gothenburg that I am looking forward to start working on with the students in the course.
Me elsewhere ..
